Beautiful Tomatoes

Yesterday I bought some beautiful tomatoes.
These are no ordinary toms, these have an equisite flavour and a scent that takes you back to your childhood. For those of you who have never eaten tomatoes from southern europe, I feel sorry for you because the taste of a perfect tomatoe is one of lifes great pleasures.

Tomatoes are a major part of the mediterranean diet but over the past 20 years the quality has dropped, due to intensive growing under glass and chemical feeding which produces tomatoes all year around with a uniformed shape and size, yuck!

But by avoiding large supermarkets and shopping locally you can still buy wonderful produce, including tomatoes.Look at these! Organically grown heart tomatoes. Beautiful to behold and delicious to eat.

  1. Wow, what heart shaped lovely beauties! I try to buy local produce here in Puerto Rico, too, though I was surprised that some people buy at the local chain Sams and repack the imported produce to sell on the streets. I came over from My Castle in Spain...good luck on your house move...it's so beautiful though. Why move?

Love the violin, photo...it's one of my favorite instruments- what a tender and powerful sound it can make... Take care <3

    Hey Tim,

I saw that you are also a jazz freak. I celebrated Keith Jarrett on my blog last week. You might like it.

  4. Fresh tomatoes are available in the summer in California, especially in farmer's markets. My granddad planted tomatoes every year, "Early Girls" and cherry tomatoes. Fresh, home grown tomatoes are one of the simple joys in life, and the "engineered" varieties really have nothing in common with a real tomato.

The morning we left Sevilla by train, we went to the station cafe/bar to get coffee and noticed everyone was ordering pan tomate, which consisted of baguette-like toast, buttered, and the guts of a tomato squished out on top. After watching the cafe staff prepare it over the course of five minutes, we were drooling, and ended up ordering it too. That simple snack was one of the delights of our trip, and we're still talking about it 12 years later.
