The bulls - The essential Spain

Osborne Bull, Spain. Photograph by Tim IrvingPhotograph available from my Etsy shop

As you travel around Spain you'll see these great bulls on hills looking down on you. From the French border in the north to the Straights of Gibraltar in the south, the bulls are never far away. When you get close to one you'll see they are flat, made from sheet metal and stand about 5o feet high.

I love these bulls, to me they are the essential Spain. The photograph above was taken travelling through the great desert area between Toledo and Madrid.

Who creates the bulls?
They're an advert for the Osborne sherry company in Jerez.

  3. If I didn't know this were an advert, I'd probably think I were approaching bull territory.

About how many are they? Ever seen a bullfight?

  4. I've never counted them but there are hundreds of these bulls throughout Spain.
I've never been to a bullfight, I feel sorry for the bulls.

  5. Hundreds? That's cool. I'd pose for a picture if ever I saw one.

As for the bullfight, I hear you. It's a cruel form of live entertainment.

Btw, I clicked on that b/w photo of that boy in a cub scout uniform (I think?) but it won't open and enlarge.
