A microclimate is a little pocket of weather that is different from the surrounding weather. Imagine a small town in Florida where it snows in the summer, or an area of London where the sun shines for 300 days a year (ha ha ha), well that's a microclimate. The Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall are a good example. The village in Spain where this house sits is in a microclimate that is blessed with 320 days of sunshine a year. I know what you are thinking - those poor villagers have to suffer 45 days every year when it's cloudy. Also this village sits high enough that it doesn't get too hot in the summer. Let me just say it's a pleasant place to live.
The downside to all this sunhine is glare. The houses in this village tend to have lots of windows on the upper floors to take advantage of the light. However, the light has to be controlled and you have to be creative with your colors to calm things down.
Earth colours are the answer! Raw Sienna, Sienna, Raw Umber and Burnt Umber, and in the above house - a colour wash of ochre.

Ochre is a forever color. Whenever I paint, I reach for it constantly.
