First thing every morning, and before dinner every evening, I walk my dog in the countryside that surrounds the village.
I made this video on our walk yesterday about 7.30pm.
On the walk I have the sound of the water from the acequia to listen to, plus occasionally other dogs barking at my dog!
Acequia are a network of narrow channels, installed over 200 years ago, they carry melted snow water from the high mountains of the Sierra Nevada, through chestnut trees, cherry orchards, olive and almond groves and citrus groves.
The acequia run next to the original mule paths and can be diverted to irrigate the vegetable patches. They run under villages and pop up in gardens.

I did wonder about the water source when I saw that photo of olive trees. I thought that perhaps they only need little water to thrive. Now it all makes sense.

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely fascinating. I had no idea. It's doubly interesting since the system is so old. (and the way your days unfold, I'm telling you, it sounds like a movie).
