Strictly Come Dancing
There's a lot in the news about a TV programme called "Strictly Come Dancing". I saw the programme last time I was in the UK but I must be one of the few that didn't become addicted. I can tell the programme is a success because I read something about it (on the Internet), every day. It made me wonder how many of the 8.9 million (which must be more than 10% of UK population) viewers actually dance.
I've spent plenty of days and evenings photographing ballrooms and I can tell you, the photograph above is very typical, four couples and an organist!

I keep repeating myself in my comments, but I can't help it! Beautiful! Looking at this I feel transported to a different time and place.
ReplyDeleteHere in my neck of the woods there is a place to ballroom dance on Thursdays & Fridays to an excellent quartet, and on Saturdays to a full orchestra. Because it's a university town, swing dancing is popular. And according to a friend of mine who is an avid swing dancer (he dresses up in zoot suits and all), Saturday nights with the full orchestra is crowded and lively. On a recent Thursday night I gave an elderly friend (whose eyesight is failing) a ride up there and back. I sat nursing a drink and watched some darn good dancing, the floor swirling with people of all ages.
ReplyDeleteBoth from casual rock music dancing pasts, the hubs and I decided to grow up and take about $800 worth of ballroom dancing lessons a year into our marriage. Alas, we found we were too pooped in the evenings to sit and wait for the music to start at 9:00 p.m. at the local bars and clubs. We did stumble through the foxtrot a few times at fundraising events, but are otherwise dismal failures at ballroom dancing (by the way, if a marriage can survive ballroom dancing lessons, it can survive anything). Now, however, friends are done raising kids (we are non-parents), and there is talk amongst us all about looking into the swing dancing again. If we've got a group of friends with us, I think we can make ourselves stay up late enough:)
p.s. Ms. Snavely, if you love that photo you should get it. I purchased the Tower Ballroom photo and it is, not surprisingly, even more beautiful and transporting in person.
