Framing the photographs

I believe most photographs are improved by framing, providing the frame suits the picture. Over the coming weeks I'm framing a variety of photographs for a small exhibition in Granada.

All of the frames I'm using are secondhand, some I've found. The trick is to match the frame with the photograph, sometimes using a matte to separate them, or even re-painting the frame.

This first one was an easy job, just a matter of trimming the photograph to fit the frame, but over the next few weeks I'll have some challenges. I'll keep you posted and I value your opinions.

  1. Oh where is the exhibition in Granada, I would like to come and see your work?

Also have a look at the Annette Messager post on my exhibitions blog, I was particularly interested in her photographs and written messages which were framed with black plastic insulation tape just around the edges of the glass, it looked very effective, in some she had used white plastic tape. She also did the same thing with manila gummed parcel tape too. I have tried the method and it works really well, all you need it a glass cutter and the backing hardboard. Messager hung the collections of images in shapes on the wall for further impact.
I look forward to your framing challenges! I am only up the road from you if you need any further infomation or indeed help.

  2. You have certainly framed this photograph to its very best potential, and I can't imagine it looking any better than it does here. I can't WAIT to see what you do with the rest!

That vintage dress photo is actually slated for "Round Two" of my purchases from you. Now I know exactly how I will frame it, thanks to your example. I'm a hopeless magpie and run across excellent frames of all types at thrift stores and garage sales. I'll be on the lookout for something suitable for when my copy of this photo arrives. I love it!

  3. Actually, if THAT frame and photo will be for sale, I'd like to purchase that very one. I know it's for an exhibition and all, but I'm willing to wait until after the show. Can't hurt to ask.
