Verandah, porch. Photograph by Tim IrvingIf you have the space, a verandah is a lovely addition to any house in the sun.

A verandah is a covered walkway, also called a gallery, porch or mirador.
The ones you see in Europe, like so much else, originate in Italy and are called loggias. Loggias have the arches you see here.

The word verandah comes from the Spanish word baranda, meaning railing or balcony.

Whatever the design or name, loggia, verandah, porch or gallery, this is the perfect cool sitting and relaxing area when the sun is up. Ideal for dining, drinking and dozing in the summer.
