Flamenco dancing

Flamenco dancer. Photograph by Tim IrvingThe flamenco season starts with a bang here in Andalucia and will continue over the summer. I'll take my little camera along with me whenever I go to an event, and take a few snaps for you.

These photographs are from last year. The top photograph is a performance of contemporary flamenco based on a Lorca poem. Notice the lightweight dresses.

The black and white images are of a more traditional dancer, they were taken at about 2am on a hot night. These traditional dresses weigh a ton and I'm always amazed at the stamina of these dancers.

  3. I have been studying flamenco for some five years, and am so happy to have found your blog. On my To do list before I leave this earth is to return to Spain for the flamenco season in Andalucia.

Thank you for truly beautiful photography!

  4. Oh, I like the traditional photos. That's what I would love to see. We were unable to make it to a Flamenco performance when we were in Spain, but if we had found the time we intended to find something as local as possible. Now seeing your photos, I'm so sorry we missed the opportunity. I think I remember reading during that time that it is the more mature women who really bring out the drama and beauty of an authentic Flamenco. Is that true or am I thinking of something else? Is a little bit of age valued in this dance?
