I have a soft spot for pears that goes back to my childhood. As a naughty boy I had the bad habit of stealing fruit from neighbour's trees, we called it scrumping. Isn't scrumping a lovely word.
As a scrumper, pears were the most desirable fruit, and cooking apples, with their laxative effects were the least desirable, but I still scrumped them and suffered the stomach cramps.
The pears in the photograph were given to me by a neighbour, I didn't scrump them. They are miniature pears measuring 2 inches high and I think they are wonderful.
They taste very good like a Williams pear, the ones here have a firm texture and are slightly under ripe.
The other fruit in the bowl is a loquat or nispero. The nispero is a wierd fruit! It has four or five big seeds and what little flesh it has is dry and bitter. The colours of the pears and nisperos compliment each other, but as for taste, I'd rather eat a cooking apple than a nispero.
