A very funny woman

The joke. Photograph by Tim Irving
I was woken up around 1am last night by the sound of two girls laughing. If you're going to get woken from a deep sleep, then the sound of laughing is not bad. Much better than an argument or a crash and infinitely better than the sound of a telephone. I lay there listening to the laughter fading away in the night, then I had a little chuckle to myself and dropped of back to sleep.

This was a bit of a coincidence because one of my neighbours who died last Friday (that's her sitting in the middle of the photograph), had the most contagious laugh I've ever heard, think of Phyllis Diller and you're pretty close. In fact she was one of the great characters of this pueblo and a natural comedienne.

Her name was Dolores and she lived for 88 years without straying more than a few miles from her home. She was extremely intelligent and very observant, she made me laugh every time we met, which was usually every morning when she was cleaning the street in front of her house.

Dolores wasn't simply amusing, she was so funny that she made me consider how I could photograph a joke. It's abstract to capture the moment when a joke hits spot, but Dolores made it easy because the laughs came so often.

Dolores was one of the very few women of her age in the village, who didn't attend mass, even during Semana Santa, but she did listen to church services every Sunday on the radio, at a very high volume.

Adios Dolores.
