Framing and cropping

French landscape. Photograph by Tim IrvingMore framing today. The picture above is square, it comes from a square negative and I print it square, but I see no reason why it shouldn't be displayed in a portrait frame. Although I can't make up my mind on this one - I think I'll leave it as it is.

  1. I think it looks fabulous in the portrait sized opening, especially with the unexpected curvaceous mat. It gives me the feeling of looking into a shadow box or a small theater stage. The poppy looks so dramtic in that photo anyway, but that particular mat really kicks up the depth.

I have one question though, concerning the color of the velvet & leather vs that of the poppies. It's difficult for me to tell for sure from way over here, but are there any colors in the stamen of the poppy that pick up the plum colors in the frame? Or are there any tones in the frame that pick up the persimmon colors of the poppy? I like the colors together as long as there are shadows or highlights in the frame and photo that even subtly unite the two.
