The world is changing fast

Pony and rider, Andalucia. Photograph by Tim IrvingThe man in the photograph above lives near me, and I pass his house most days when I'm walking the dog. The pony (who doesn't have a name), has been his sole form of transport for the past 10 years. Every single day I have seen man and pony sauntering down a lane.

Over the past few weeks I've seen the man many times, but no pony. I'm afraid to ask!

When I first moved to Spain, horses, mules, donkeys and oxen were a common sight. Seven years ago in my small village there were 5 mules, 2 horses and the pony above, now we're down to 1 horse and 1 mule. Que sera, sera!

  1. This makes me sad....

Is it because they are dying and not being replaced, or is there a new 'law' not allowing this beautiful means of gentle transport?

  2. I think it's easier to keep a small tractor.
