I think it's true that most self representing artists spend more time promoting their work than actually creating art. I certainly spend a lot of time writing emails to various websites and blogs in the hope that I'll get a mention and a chance to display my work. It's ironic, I spent seven years in various art schools and no one ever mentioned marketing!Marketing is probably the most difficult aspect of the job. Finding places on the internet to show my work is almost a full time job. Just think how many websites and blogs there are in the world, millions right! Out of those millions, how many would display art? Well it's a handful, a few thousand, and of that handful there are just a few where my style of photographs fit in.
On one hand, the internet has opened up so many avenues that were never there for artists maybe a decade ago - on the other hand, the competition is fierce now!
So I'm thrilled to announce that Ness Lockyer, of Marley and Lockyer is featuring my photographs everyday this week. And, on Friday will be giving away two of my prints. Ness is a 'lover of all things white, French, beautiful and a Home' - something I relate to very well!
Please go and have a look at Marley and Lockyer I think you'll find it's a very stylish blog, good furniture and decoration, witty writing and excellent photography. And please leave a comment.
The photographs on this blog were taken by me, unless otherwise noted. If you'd like to share them with friends or use them in some way, please let people know where you found them, or send me an
Tim,
ReplyDeleteYou know I'm a huge supporter of your photography and art! The world is a better place with such beauty being created by you and others with such immense talent.
I'm going to visit Marley Lockyer now...
Happy week of marketing to you!
Melissa
There is a painter here on the Central Coast of California who has, along with/because of his wife, become an expert at marketing his artwork. His website is www.robertburridge.com. He has a free online newsletter that often has marketing tips, and he has taught many classes about it. I know that the exposure of marketing often collides with a creative person's need for solitude. It's such a charge to receive attention for one's artwork, but can be scary to put yourself out there to peddle your work. So I wish you the best with that. Your work is lovely and has its own quality.
ReplyDeleteI'll go check out the lockyear site. There's no way I'm going to miss out on a chance to receive one of your photographs!
Oh drat, I'm too late by a week:(
ReplyDeleteThat's okay, it was a lovely website and I enjoyed visiting it (too much! more to love and want!).
